About Us
The discovery of fluorspar deposits in Kimwarer, located in the Kerio Valley of Elgeyo Marakwet County, Kenya, dates back to 1967. This led to the establishment of the Fluorspar Company of Kenya by the government to facilitate large-scale extraction. In February 2024, following the exit of Kenya Fluorspar Company eight years earlier, the Government of Kenya, through the State Department of Mining, signed a new contract with Sofax Fluorspar Kenya Limited to revive fluorspar mining in Kerio Valley.
Fluorspar is a critical mineral used as a feedstock in various industries, including the production of steel, aluminium, glass, ceramics, and propellants in medicine. It is also essential for uranium enrichment and in the production of the electrolyte used in electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
Today, Sofax Fluorspar is fairly complex plant with capacity of processing approx. ……. million tons of ore per annum and producing around ………… tons of …………. annually

WHAT WE DO
Sofax does continuous prospection and exploration, mine infrastructure development, and extraction (excavation) of fluorspar from 15No. open-pit mines within Kimwarer, which is delivered to the mill.
Sofax does operate a processing plant which concentrates the ore to 97% CaFâ‚‚ acidspar grade. The plant integrated operations comprise; Crushing, Milling, Flotation and Filtration. The concentrate is dried and stockpiled.
Sofax does have customers of the acidspar grade in Europe, Asia, Americas and Africa. The acidspar is transported from mill to market with truck haulage to Kaptagat rail marshalling yard, loaded into Rail Wagons to bulk vessel carrier loading berth at Mbaraki Wharf in Mombasa.
